Yogyakarta, 18–19 October 2025 — Twenty-four young writers gathered for a two-day Writership Academy at SM Tower Malioboro in Yogyakarta under the theme “Young People Building the Narrative of Equality: Sharpening Writing Skills in the Digital Era.” The event was a collaboration between the Suara ‘Aisyiyah Institute and PP ‘Aisyiyah’s INKLUSI Program, part of the Australia–Indonesia Partnership Towards an Inclusive Society, supported by DFAT and Bappenas.

The training aimed to equip young people with writing skills rooted in the principles of gender equality, disability rights, and social inclusion (GEDSI). As a key partner of the INKLUSI Program, ‘Aisyiyah is committed to nurturing a new generation of socially conscious writers who can channel justice-based narratives through storytelling and evidence-based perspectives.

Participants were selected through an open competition that required them to submit writing samples on GEDSI-related issues—ranging from women and children’s rights to disability and other vulnerable groups. The cohort included writers from diverse backgrounds, including persons with disabilities, reflecting a commitment to making literacy spaces inclusive and just.

Tri Hastuti Nur Rochimah, Secretary-General of PP ‘Aisyiyah, emphasised the strategic role of young writers as changemakers.

“As digital natives, you have the power to create a more equal and safer world through your writing,” she said in her opening remarks.

Participants engaged in hands-on sessions on popular writing techniques, news and interview writing, feature writing, and personal branding. These were led by experienced journalists and editors including Ridha Basri (Suara Muhammadiyah), Hera Diani (INKLUSI), Saraswati Nur (young writer), and Prima Sulistya (editor of Buku Mojok).

Annas Iqwal Perkasa, a participant with a disability, shared that the training strengthened both his technical skills and confidence to write about the social challenges he faces.

“I feel more confident writing about my concerns, especially around equitable access,” said the Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University student.

With a strong emphasis on critical analysis and storytelling, the program aspires to empower young people to shape a more just, inclusive, and representative public discourse.
