To commemorate International Women’s Day, KAPAL Perempuan hosted a series of events titled Accelerating Action for Gender Equality on 7 March 2025 in Jakarta. This event served as a crucial moment to strengthen the women’s movement and promote women’s participation in decision-making across Indonesia. As a partner of the INKLUSI Program, KAPAL Perempuan continues to play a vital role in advancing women’s leadership and advocating for their rights at various levels.
The event brought together women leaders from Sekolah Perempuan (Women’s Schools) operating in 46 villages across 10 districts, along with women human rights defenders from 33 districts. Additionally, civil society organisations (CSOs) and key stakeholders joined in the celebration. The program featured exhibitions and a marketplace showcasing Sekolah Perempuan initiatives, traditional dance performances from across Indonesia, a music performance by Jakarta Women’s School, and a talk show titled Women’s Movement for Justice in Indonesia.
KAPAL Perempuan’s Executive Director, Budhis Utami, emphasised the significance of grassroots women’s leadership. “KAPAL Perempuan has achieved a great deal, but what makes us most proud is how our work has nurtured resilient women leaders who empower their communities,” she stated.
As a tribute to women’s contributions, KAPAL Perempuan presented the Grassroots Women Leadership Award to over 40 women, including leaders and members of Sekolah Perempuan, as well as individuals who have championed women’s rights. One of the awardees, Fitri, Chair of the Young Women’s School in Sabutung Island, shared her experience:
The Young Women’s School has given me the space to discover myself, speak up for my rights, and fight against gender discrimination. I hope more young women in Sabutung Island will find the courage to raise their voices and assert their rights, she said.
During the event, KAPAL Perempuan also launched various knowledge products, including books, educational modules, and research reports focusing on feminist critical education. These publications reflect the organisation’s 25-year journey in advocating women’s rights and gender equality.
Through the INKLUSI Program, KAPAL Perempuan remains committed to strengthening grassroots women’s leadership, ensuring their active participation in development planning, and advocating for their rights within their communities. By taking these steps, the organisation aims to create a more inclusive and equal society where no woman is left behind.
