Perempuan Memanah Rembulan: Ketoprak as a Voice of Resistance Against Violence

Surakarta, 2 December 2025 — As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Migrant CARE presented a traditional ketoprak performance titled Perempuan Memanah Rembulan at the Arena Theatre of the Central Java Cultural Park (TBS), Surakarta.

The performance was a collaboration between Migrant CARE and the traditional arts collective Ketoprak Srawung Bersama, supported by the INKLUSI Program. By utilising traditional performing arts as a medium for public education and advocacy, the event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of equitable, just relationships and the protection of women’s rights.

Rich in symbolism, Perempuan Memanah Rembulan tells a story of women’s courage, resilience, and resistance in the face of systemic injustice. Set against a backdrop of social and economic inequality, the narrative reflects the lived realities of women who fight to uphold their dignity and agency, even within conditions shaped by exploitation and power imbalances.

“This cultural initiative is not only a space for artistic expression, but also a platform to amplify the experiences and aspirations of communities that have long been marginalised,” said Wahyu Susilo, Executive Director of Migrant CARE.

Ketoprak as a Medium for Advocacy

The performance forms part of Migrant CARE’s broader strategy to use culturally rooted, creative approaches in promoting women’s rights—particularly for women migrant workers. Through traditional arts, the organisation creates spaces where women’s voices and experiences, often silenced or overlooked, can be expressed and heard.

Perempuan Memanah Rembulan also acts as a catalyst for critical reflection, encouraging audiences to confront structural violence and question dominant narratives around gender and power.

Migrant CARE, with support from the INKLUSI Program, continues to champion the use of arts and culture as tools for social transformation. By fostering inclusive and safe spaces for women to speak out, these initiatives demonstrate that resistance can take many forms—including the stage.
