Migrant CARE commemorated International Migrant Day by organising an event themed ‘Migrant Day 2023: Honouring Contributions and Rights of Migrant Workers’ for three days, from December 18 to 20, 2023, at The Margo Hotel, West Java. The event, supported by INKLUSI was attended by national and regional government officials, former and current Indonesian migrant workers and their networks across various countries, and other institutions.

Held online and offline, it featured public discussions, the launch of pre-departure migrant worker modules, film screenings, photo exhibitions, music performances, and a cultural performance by Migrant CARE’s DESBUMI members, a community of former migrant workers from different regions in Indonesia.

A crucial component was the Development Planning Forum (Musrenbang) themed ‘Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers’ as part of the Migrant Day 2023 series. This served as an opportunity for migrant workers and former migrant workers assisted by Migrant CARE, to voice their aspirations, ensuring that migrant worker issues are not overlooked in the development planning process. The outcomes of the Migrant Workers’ Protection Musrenbang are expected to serve as a foundation for improving policies and enhancing protection for migrant workers in Indonesia.

Migrant CARE also showcased their knowledge and communication products, including the Migrant Channel on RRI Digital, research on the economic potential of former migrant workers, and the Migrant CARE newsletter. These initiatives aim to enhance understanding of migrant worker challenges, promote best practices in addressing these issues, and build connections between migrant workers and society to gain support of their rights.

Wahyu Susilo, the Executive Director of Migrant CARE, stated, “This activity is part of our efforts to ensure that the protection of migrant workers becomes a crucial focus in the long-term agenda of Indonesia’s national development.”

Through the INKLUSI Program, Migrant CARE strives to advocate for the rights of migrant workers, particularly focusing on the economic recovery and livelihoods of migrant workers and former migrant workers. This is achieved primarily through strengthening economic groups and cooperatives, advocating for social protection for migrant workers and their families, and supporting inclusive employment.
